Make Caps Lock Esc on tap and Ctrl on hold (two jobs for one key)
Caps Lock sits in the best spot on the keyboard and almost nobody uses it. Give it two jobs: Esc on a quick tap, Ctrl while held. The same idea works in games: one thing on a tap, another on a hold.
Symptoms
- You hit Caps Lock by accident and type in capitals.
- Reaching for Esc and Ctrl pulls your hand off the home row.
- In a game there are not enough keys close by and you want one key to do two things.
Why it happens
Windows gives each key one job. For a key to do one thing on a short press and another when held, something has to watch how long it stays down and decide: an app or the keyboard's own firmware.
Free options
- PowerToys Keyboard Manager (free) can turn Caps Lock into another single key, but it does not tell taps from holds.
- AutoHotkey (free) can do it with a script, if you are comfortable writing one.
- Some mechanical keyboards (QMK/VIA) do it in the keyboard itself; only on those keyboards.
The fix with HEJİR
- Download and install HEJİR (free).
- In Keyboard › Keys, click the Caps key and choose “Tap / hold”.
- Set Tap: Esc and Hold: Ctrl. Start at 200 ms; raise it if Ctrl kicks in by accident.
- Switch the keyboard module on (top right).
When you press the key HEJİR waits. Let go before the time you chose and it sends the tap key (Esc). If the time runs out, or you press another key meanwhile, it presses the hold key (Ctrl) and keeps it down until you let go. So Caps + C becomes Ctrl + C.
Good to know
- This feature is Pro; try it for 3 days, no card. The free tier has 3 plain key assignments across mouse and keyboard.
- The tap key is sent when you let go, not when you press. You won't notice it for Esc, but for a key that must react instantly in a game, use the hold side.
- If you press another key while Caps is down during fast typing, that counts as Ctrl; that is by design.
- Some competitive games' rules may forbid remapping keys; check the rules of your game.
